Winlink Wednesday Comes To Minnesota
Ham radio operators in Minnesota have something exciting to add to their weekly schedules—a brand-new Winlink Wednesday net designed to connect hams through digital communication in a fresh and interactive way.
Winlink, a powerful tool for email over radio frequency, is a cornerstone of emergency communication. But its applications go far beyond just prepping for a disaster—it’s also a fantastic way to build skills and connect with fellow operators. That’s exactly what the Minnesota Ham Radio #WinlinkWednesday Net is all about: fostering connection, improving skills, and verifying station operation while adding a bit of fun to midweek ham radio activities.
Minnesota Ham Radio founder Matt Kaskavitch, K0LWC, encourages Minnesota operators to dive in and give it a try. “Winlink is such an important tool for the modern ham. It’s not just about sending emails which we all do every day; it’s about learning how to stay connected when traditional methods fail. This net is a great way to ensure your station’s Winlink capability is working while interacting with the local ham community at the same time,” says Kaskavitch.
“Practicing Winlink isn’t just about the gear or the software—it’s about being confident in your ability to use it when the chips are down,” Kaskavitch adds.
The Minnesota Winlink Wednesday Net stands out because of its interactive twist. Instead of sending a message into the void and calling it a day, operators will get to engage with others. It’s what Matt Todd, KG0E enjoys about #WinlinkWednesday.
“What I like about this one versus the other Winlink Wednesday nets is that there is interaction. It’s not just a fire-and-forget message.”
Matt, KG0E
Participants receive a message from the MHR net control operator every Wednesday morning. It will include background on what radio activities the net control op has been up to that way and then present a “question of the week”. Once you receive the MHR net control message, other members of the net are encouraged to respond by hitting ‘Reply All’ so everyone on the list can read the responses. This back-and-forth adds a personal touch that’s often missing from digital modes.
“I love sharing and reading about what is going on with others. It has introduced me to a few new facets of ham radio.”
Kyle, KF0POS
